Children's Musical
| Get ready for Salem's Spring 2011 Children's Musical… That's So DANIEL! Salem Kids from Kindergarten through High School are invited to bring the Bible to life in a fresh and vibrant way with That's So Daniel! A musical about Making Good Choices! While home from school pretending to be sick, a young boy, Daniel, with a reputation for stretching the truth is surprised to learn that his babysitter for the day is to be his grandfather. Suspicious of the validity of the young boy's "illness," the grandfather shares stories about the Daniel in the Bible. These life-changing lessons about honesty, obedience, and worshiping only the One true living God come to life as the cast recounts the biblical tale of Daniel and his encounter with King Nebuchadnezzar, a lion's den, and a fiery furnace. Kids learn their parts by listening to the CD, rehearsing choreography to each song, and practicing their lines. Carol Sampler Celebrates the Savior in Salem Christmas Cantata Dec. 11-12
A devotional musical treat awaits those who worship Sat. Dec. 11th at 5:00 p
m. And Sun. Dec. 12th at 10:30 a.m. As Salem Lutheran choirs, handbells,
orchestra, and narrators celebrate the gift of a Savior in song. Created by
composer Joel Raney, "A Thrill of Hope" centers on melodic themes from the
beloved carol "O Holy Night" with tunes from a myriad of other hymns and
carols, introduced by thoughtful narration.
Four movements lead the pace from contemplation to celebration in frequently
changing meter, key, and tune: A Thrill of Hope includes Long Ago Prophets
Knew, Sing We Now of Christmas, The First Noel, and Come, Thou Long Expected
Jesus. A Gift of Love includes Love Came Down at Christmas, Angels from the
Realms of Glory, Love Divine, all Loves Excelling, Away in a Manger, and The
Gift of Love.
Salem Children's Choirs introduce the third movement, A Prayer for Peace,
including Silent Night, Let there be Peace on Earth, and O Holy Night.
The cantata concludes with the fourth movement, A Song of Joy, including
Rejoice, Mary Had a Baby, Angels we have Heard on High, Hark! The Herald
Angels Sing, Joy to the World, and Good Christian Friends, Rejoice!
Carla Vanatta, Salem Associate in Ministry, directs the cantata assisted by
Michael Kasper and Merideth Weber. Ronald Vanatta, Salem organist,
accompanies the choir on piano. Orchestral musicians include Jennifer Cobb
and Susan Herrmann, flute, Leif Anderson, trombone, Jenna Hoffman, cello,
Michael Kasper and Denny Vaupel, percussion, and violinists Corinne and Owen
Ruff and Rotary Foreign Exchange Student, Annie Chen from Taiwan.
Salem Creative Arts groups involved include Cherub Choir, Salem Choristers,
Disciple Song, Celebration Voices, and Sounds of Grace Bells assisted by
additional singers from the congregation and community.
The music for A Thrill of Hope Christmas Cantata was gifted as a Singing
Memorial in memory of Cathryn Hindenburg by her daughter, Carol Boise.
Though it has the same title as DeKalb's Celebration Chorale presentation
Dec. 4-5, the composer and content is different.
Worship will also include a brief presentation by Salem Puppeteers at the
Children's Sermon, lighting of the Advent wreath, prayer, hymns, and Holy
Communion. All are welcome at the Lord 's Table.

Salem Christmas Cantata
to look at the birth of Christ from four distinct vantage points:
celebrating the HOPE he brought, the LOVE he showed, the PEACE he promised,
and the JOY of Emmanuel, God with us, forevermore!
Singers are invited to share their gift of music to bring this cantata to
life, telling the Christmas story in ways both warm and familiar and fresh
using thoughtful narration, scripture, and a medley of familiar songs and
carols. Interested singers are welcome to join Salem Choirs. Salem Cherubs,
Choristers, Sounds of Grace Bells , and a small orchestra will also
participate.
Five Wednesday and three Sunday evening rehearsals for adult singers are
scheduled this November & December. Music books and rehearsal CDs are
available for home practice.

Raisin' Praise Fall 2010
| Like to Sing? Interested in learning Handbells or how to bring a Puppet to life? Salem Creative Arts fall program, Raisin' Praise, begins mid-September and has a place for you. Children age 4 through senior citizens will find a choir for their age group rehearsing on Wednesdays... 5th grade and up youth and adults come together in intergenerational groups Thursday evenings to build Puppet skills or learn English Handbell ringing. Each group prepares music to share for Salem worship services on a rotating basis. See the Creative Arts Calendar for the fall schedule and share your gift of praise! This fall's theme, Raisin' Praise, is centered on the American farm. Each week at choir children in Cherubs and Choristers will learn about farm animals God created and enjoy a field trip or two to local farms. Summer Choir
Twice a month this summer singers gather to prepare a gift of music for 10:30 worship. Thanks to all who have given of their talents!
Three summer choir dates remain:
July 25th, August 8th, and August 22nd.
Rehearsal is held from 9:45-10:15 a.m. in the Choir Room prior to 10:30 worship.
Please come - your voice will be a gift to God and Salem Congregation!

140th Anniversary Festival Choir
In observance of Salem’s 140th Anniversary on Easter Sunday, April 4th, we are gathering a Festival Choir to sing for Holy Week Services including:
Palm Sunday weekend, March 27-28, Good Friday, April 2, and Easter morning, April 4.
Six rehearsals will be held following Holden Evening Prayer on Wednesdays February 24th, March 3rd, 10th, 17th, and 24th from 7:45–8:45 p.m. and at 7:15 pm Wednesday, March 31st.
